Marc by Marc Jacobs at New York Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2013 RTW

There was a time back in the early noughties when the rare bird you’d hope to spot perched in the front row was Sarah Jessica Parker. These days you find twenty-first-century New Yorkers like Zosia Mamet in that seat.

The Girls actress has a sense of style that is worlds apart from the neurotic Carrie Bradshaw-obsessed Shoshanna Shapiro she plays in the cult TV series, and she managed to stay cool in her biker jacket and Breton stripes at the Marc by Marc Jacobs show even amidst a Jonas Brothers feeding frenzy happening the next row over.

Jacobs is never one to shy away from a quirky character, and the models came down the runway layered up with button-down shirts under full-skirted dresses in a riot of mix-matched prints. Red and blue Maasai-inspired scarves were worn as obi belts or headwraps, suggesting a girl who likes her fashion with a side of wanderlust, and wooden geisha slippers were worn with chunky socks for a look that was part Kyoto, part Portlandia. The playful striped paper bag pants and loose-fitting blazers rolled up at the sleeves hinted at a silhouette of new romantic proportions and played into a bigger idea of the volume we’ve seen this week.

Admittedly pulling this look together in the real world would be no small styling feat. Taken apart, though, there were pieces that would play an instant mood-brightening role in a young woman’s wardrobe. Checkered patch-pocket skirts and slouchy high-waisted pants offered new sartorial directives that cool girls like Mamet would be wise to consider.
